You’re More Than A Number
by Journey to Health Program Director, Becky Anderson
I used to love to travel all over the country and give talks on a variety of topics. I’ve given one motivational talk about numbers many times. The talk is about an hour long, but here are the cliff notes of what I feel is the most impactful part.
OK, don’t think too long and hard on this. Get a piece of paper and pen and be prepared to write as soon as I tell you what you’re to write down. Everyone ready? Remember, not too much thought; just the first thing to come to your mind.
Write down 5 numbers that have some kind of significance to your life. Hurry!! Write them down. I’ll wait.
OK, now I will share my 5 #’s and why I chose those 5.
#7 is my lucky single digit # bc it is God’s #.
#34 is my lucky double digit # and the # I wore in my sports all of my life. I started wearing it bc of Walter Payton in case any of you remember who he was.
#91 bc that was the year I graduated HS and the year my HS basketball team won state.
#5 bc I was the youngest of 5 kids in my family, and I have 5 kids.
#73 bc that was the year I was born.
Now I will say I am not a #s driven person, but did you notice anything about the first #s that came to my mind? None of these #s are my current weight nor my ideal weight. Nothing to do with weight. My point? You are MORE THAN A NUMBER. If you focus on truly important things in your life (like the significance behind your 5 #s), you will see that the actual # on the scale is NOT what defines you. There is SO MUCH more to you than what the scale tells you about yourself.
